Chia Hu, a native of Hsinchu, Taiwan, grounds his art in martial arts, blending Butoh and improvisational performance to explore the flow of bodily energy and embody the rhythm of life between hardness and softness. Deeply inspired by the Monkey-Crane Dual Form Boxing, he has honed his craft through persistent practice, finding transformation between strength and gentleness through focus, making martial arts the foundation of his artistic creation.
Chia Hu's work centers on darkness, seeing "darkness" as the birthplace of "light," capturing the rhythm of life within the dimmest glimmers. He delves into the interplay of opposition and harmony, strength and softness, interpreting the profound meanings of love and freedom through the dialogue between body and art. His performances are a meditative practice focused on the present moment, offering audiences an experience of tension and release within stillness and motion.
As the third-generation inheritor of Taiwan's Monkey-Crane Dual Form Boxing and the artistic director of the Dark Dance Theatre, Chia Hu has dedicated himself to merging martial arts with art, opening new doors to artistic possibilities. Using mediums such as film, children's picture books, and stage performances, he continuously promotes cross-cultural exchange, infusing the vitality of martial arts into the context of contemporary art.
