Technology and Art in the Age of the Algorithm

Looking back at the history of Western art, each era's technological advances have consistently opened new possibilities for artistic creation. From the anatomical knowledge of the Renaissance and the application of projective geometry, to the revolution of photography, and now to Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and beyond — today's most prominent art-related topics all fall within the broad domain of the "algorithm," clearly demonstrating the deep interconnection between technology and art. As generative AI continues to evolve, artists' creative methods and ways of thinking face new aesthetic challenges for this era.

The introduction of AI has expanded the boundaries of contemporary artistic creation. Within the Western tradition of technological thought, technology has always been an extension of instrumental rationality — yet returning to the essence of art, it remains, at its core, an exploration of questions concerning human existence. As AI becomes increasingly integrated into daily life, we are compelled to ask: against the backdrop of relentless technological progress, what new forms of emotional alienation will human beings come to experience, unlike anything before? For the artist, the enduring value of creative work has always been grounded in authentic human nature — responding, across different times and places, to humanity's ultimate inquiry into and care for the very essence of life itself.

Albert Einstein (1879–1955) once said: "The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science." Beauty, too, is mysterious — and thus it is equally the origin of both art and science.

Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908–1961), in his Phenomenology of Perception, observed:

We must reawaken our experience of the world, for we exist in the world through our bodies, and it is through our bodies that we perceive the world. The artist takes the bodily intervention into the "present moment" of the picture as a point of reference: beyond the canvas lies the world of lived reality; within it lies the totality of human perception and imagination — allowing the spirit to transcend the finitude of the body.

The seven artists in this exhibition, each with a distinctly different style, are as follows: Wei-Ming Wang's works convey the splendor and solemnity of a technological alternate dimension, reflecting on the spirit of history and humanistic thought; Chih-Wei Hsu's practice, viewed through the lens of the phenomenology of perception, explores the dialectical relationship between perception and existence through bodily engagement with the pictorial present; Ko-Wei Chen's works combine young women with botanical flora to present a vision at once gorgeous and science-fictional, balancing rational spirit with aesthetic sensibility; Yuan-Hung Lee takes mechanical science fiction as his subject, merging virtual imagery with Eastern ink painting to create a distinctly cyborg visual aesthetic. Hsin-Yu Lee's works explore the relationship among "light, time, and inner state," drawing viewers into immersive poetic spaces and sensory imagery; Yan-Hsuan Ke employs the recurring motif of the "monkey" and the layering of multi-dimensional spaces to articulate an artistic perspective that is distinctly of the younger generation; finally, Ting-Yu Lin draws from careful observation of personal daily life, integrating contemporary technology to express her own perspective.

Art works, therefore, may be understood not only as crystallizations of human technological civilization (technological art), but also as extensions of human emotion and thought.
